Original title

Vue du Chateau de Vincennes du côté de l'Entrée - Prospectus Castri Vincennarum ex parte ingressus.

Description

XVIIIth century optical view in original watercolors. Original copper plate engraving on laid paper heightened with watercolor at that time. Published in Paris circa 1780, depicting a view of the Château de Vincennes (France).

During the 18th Century, several renowned establishments in Paris, London (England), Augsburg (Germany) and Bassano (Italy) were specialized in the creation of these optical views. They could be viewed alone or through a zograscope, a wooden foot surmounted by a lens which enlarged the image and accentuated the perspective effect. They could also be placed in optical boxes, the spectator then looked inside the box through the lens. This distraction was greatly appreciated in the 18th Century in the salons of the bourgeoisie and the nobility as in the countryside thanks to the hawkers.

These etchings are nowadays exhibited in museums around the world and extremely appreciated by collectors and decorators for their historical interest and their high decorative value.

Vincennes castle

The Château de Vincennes is a fortress located in Vincennes, east of Paris, erected from the 14th century to the 17th century. The fortress is located near the capital, about eight kilometers from the Ile de la Cité. Unlike the majority of fortified castles, it is not located on a hill, a hill or on the top of a cliff, but on a limestone plateau. It is not near a stream, but only a stream, the Ru de Montreuil, descending from the Montreuil plateau, which fed the moats, the overflow of which then headed towards Paris and threw itself into the lake of Saint-Mandé. In the Middle Ages, the time of construction, the site was covered by a forest full of game.

This fortress is made up of a long perimeter wall, flanked by three doors and six towers 42 meters high which develops over more than a kilometer. In the Middle Ages, the whole made it possible to live on the spot for tens of thousands of people.

The keep was designed to shelter the King of France in case of danger. It alone is a stronghold. Large moats, a châtelet and two drawbridges provide its defense. The lowest level serves as a reserve of water and food. The first and second floors are the royal apartments. The three other upper levels accommodate the servants and the military.

The construction and embellishment of the castle continues under the Valois. François I had the pavilion built by Louis XI redesigned to reside there during his stays in the capital.

Henri II, who had transferred the seat of the Order of Saint Michael to Vincennes, entrusted the completion of the works of the Sainte-Chapelle to his favorite architect, Philibert Delorme, and the chapel could finally be inaugurated in 1552 .

The architect Louis Le Vau built the wings of the King and the Queen for Louis XIV.

The keep was converted into a state prison for prisoners of high birth. Its capacity did not allow it to house more than fourteen inmates.

The castle was definitively abandoned as a royal residence when the King moved to Versailles, around 1670.

History of the Optical views

At the apogee of the mode for optical views, between 1750 and 1790, four European cities specialized in their edition: Paris (France), London (England), Augsburg (Germany) and Bassano (Italy).

Optical views are prized in very different social circles : pleasant recreation in aristocratic salons, the views are admired in beautiful and richly decorated optical boxes which are real works of art. The show was transformed into a real scientific experiment. But the optical views also entertained the people who were in a hurry when a hawker set up a box on a market and began to narrate the extraordinary events that had taken place in a more or less distant and inaccessible country.

There are three categories in the production of optical views.

  • Topographic views: Cities, Monuments, Ports, Distant regions, reproduced with more or less accuracy, depending on the documents available to the engraver. It is obvious that the authors of these prints had not seen these territories. They therefore recomposed these landscapes by compiling various engravings and drawings, which explains many fantasies.
  • The historical scenes : Inaugurations, Coronations, Battles, Fires or Natural disasters form a subject that the people are fond of.
  • Views with a religious or moralizing theme. For educational value, these prints were mainly produced by Parisian publishers in the rue Saint-Jacques.
