Description
XVIIIth century optical view in original watercolors. Original copper plate engraving on laid paper heightened with watercolor at that time. Published in Paris circa 1760, depicting a view of Church Saint-Roch in Paris (France).
During the 18th Century, several renowned establishments in Paris, London (England), Augsburg (Germany) and Bassano (Italy) were specialized in the creation of these optical views. They could be viewed alone or through a zograscope, a wooden foot surmounted by a lens which enlarged the image and accentuated the perspective effect. They could also be placed in optical boxes, the spectator then looked inside the box through the lens. This distraction was greatly appreciated in the 18th Century in the salons of the bourgeoisie and the nobility as in the countryside thanks to the hawkers.
These etchings are nowadays exhibited in museums around the world and extremely appreciated by collectors and decorators for their historical interest and their high decorative value.

Saint-Roch Church is a church built between 1653 and 1722 on the initial plans of Jacques Le Mercier. 126 meters long, with a medieval plan, it is one of the largest in Paris.
The first stone of the new building was laid by Louis XIV, accompanied by his mother Anne of Austria, on March 23, 1653. In the new church, a chapel is dedicated to Saint Suzanne, in memory of the previous church. From 1701, Jules Hardouin-Mansart began to add a chapel dedicated to the Virgin, consisting of an elliptical central vessel surrounded by an ambulatory, which Pierre Bullet completed after his death.
From north to south, the building presents a series of chapels or architectural elements, the main ones being: Chapelle du Calvaire built in 1754, after the drawing by Falconet; Chapel of the Communion; Chapel of the Virgin, designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and built in 1709.
