Faustina the Elder Period (138-140 AD)

Faustina the Elder, born around 100 and died around 140, was a Roman empress, wife of Antoninus Pius, emperor from 138 to 161.

Coming from a Roman family of Spanish origin, she is the daughter of the consul Marcus Annius Verus. His mother is Rupilia Faustina, presumably a great-niece of Trajan.

She married Antoninus Pius between 110 and 115. They had four children.

On July 10, 138, her uncle Hadrian died and her husband, Antoninus, became the new emperor, as the heir and adopted son of Hadrian. She then became empress and the senate granted her the title of Augusta.

She is renowned for her beauty and wisdom. Throughout her life, she participated in charitable actions for the poors and children.

Faustina died during the third year of Antoninus' reign, in 140 or 141. He honored her memory by having her deified during an apotheosis and funeral games and had a temple built in her honor in the Roman Forum. He had many coins minted with his portrait.
