Faustina the Younger Period (161-175 AD)

Faustina the Younger, born between 125 and 130 in Rome, and died in 175, was a Roman empress, wife of Marcus Aurelius; she was born and raised in Rome.

Daughter of Antoninus Pius and Faustina the Elder, she is the youngest of the four children of the imperial couple.

On March 7, 161, on the death of Antoninus Pius, Faustina received the title of Augusta and became empress.

She often accompanies her husband on his military campaigns.

During the winter of 175/176, she died following an accident in Cappadocia in the military camp of Halala.

Marc Aurèle is deeply affected by his death; he buried her in the mausoleum of Hadrian in Rome, in a sculpted marble sarcophagus. She received divine honours: her statue was placed in the temple of Venus in Rome and a temple was dedicated to her.

Faustine and Marc Aurèle had thirteen children, many of whom did not reach adulthood.
